    would you expect to use another client (e.g. adium) or is only in-browser important to you? In browser like GMail has GTalk integrated would you expect to have a desktop notifier as part of this? ...

    This is a fundamental need in a collaboration tool. Shouldn't be a user request... should be basic functionality :-/
