What does it take to create a payment/invoicing system like Podio uses for all its customers?
What does it take to create a payment/invoicing system like Podio uses for all its customers? It would be absolutely wonderful to have a system like this in place for our clients to pay monthly bills and single invoices! Is this in the works - or something your dev team has discussed at all?
As is, I have coded Podio and built apps to do most of what Freshbooks does including Projects, Products, Timesheets, Reports, Quotes (using Podio to QuoteRoller integration as a VAR), and Invoices (using Podio to Freshbooks integration as a referral partner). Ultimately I would like to keep this setup for demos and referral sales. HOWEVER, I would like to have my in-house system use something similar to Podio's system. This would also allow better transparency as to how Podio stacks up to more complex accounting / CRM integrations like Netsuite (currently working on chipping away at a $100k NetSuite competitive bid).
I feel like this offering could be ONLY for Podio Authorized partners. Justifications are as follows should your team agree:
- MUCH lower merchant processing fees, and the ability to work with partners in that space. This create a revenue center as opposed to a cost.
- Fully integrated, self-serve system allowing Partners to stay focused on doing what we do best - selling, customizing, extending and training on Podio.
- A case study / demo showcase of how truly flexible Podio can be for complex API problems or application designs
- Already coded, so as a result, this should be easy to replicate and update with a global feature release correct? (Don't want to assume here)
Anyhow - this is a very nice to have. However the current system I have in place works - just at a larger cost, cannibalizing potential Podio revenue (reaching there). Very interested to see the response.
BRAVO on Podio dev team! IT. JUST. WORKS! Even with all the crazy changes and experiments - one of the best software reseller experiences we have had thus far. That's a kudos to the whole support team too!

I'm not sure if I'm the one to answer your question, but I might be able to help with your invoicing. I noticed as well it being time consuming to create invoices so I've set out to create an extension that will instead retrieve any info already in Podio to be used as the details - like time sheets for example. Over time it will be able to do much more, such as recurring billing for one. I hope you check it out; http://instantinvoicing.launchrock.com. It's still in progress but I'd love to keep you updated if you just enter your email on the website. Like you mention, it will allow people to focus on what they do best instead of on a time consuming necessity of running a business - invoicing.
