is it possible that when we create a field with categories that it auto defaults to one?

  If you chose only one in number of possible choices , and chose the field to be required , the first category in your category list will be the default one.

  I tried this today and it did not work.  Did they change this feature from when you posted this 2 years ago?  If so is there a new way to accomplish this?

  Hi Robbie,

  This still works. When you have a category field that is marked as required, then the first option will be selected by default when adding a new item to the app. Note that as Eric mentioned back in 2014, this doesn't work for items created via webform (that is still the case). 

  If it isn't working for you I would recommend writing to us via "Contact support" at the top of this page with a few screenshots showing your setup. We can help you get that working!
