Remove followers from a app item

Say I have a Project app that has a Contact field that I use to add team members who are involved in the project. Members added to this field are automatically following the app item. Halfway through I decided to move some team members out, so I just edit the app item, remove their names from the contact field. Problem is, these members are still "following" the item. So whenever we update the item, posted comment, these members who are no longer involved in the project will still be notified.

I know I could send them a message to ask them to manually "unfollow" the item, but I'm wondering if there is a way for me remove them from the followers list?
