It's very frustrating to hear Podio say that they're not doing it because you don't think you need to when the very fact that your customers are asking for it suggests there IS a need for it

You have either over looked one of two things.

1- your current work around for tasks are not properly explained hence people still dont know how to achieve the 'sub task' outcome they desire

2- the solution you propose isn't one we want as that doesnt work well with the universal tasks function as the way you suggest will result in having many tasks seperatley and not viewable from one clean dashboard

Please listen to your customers instead of justifying why you do not want to do something - or at least just say it's not worth the hassle - as said before this one feature makes Asana a more viable option even though in the long run it is a much more inferior product but businesses put up with it over Podio as this feature is so important

When it comes to recurring projects Norbert’s approach is not good. Name of apps on task list will be the same and subject to misunderstand. When you deal with bigger team and same projects all the time you need a solution that allows to easily map your process into tasks and subtasks.

For me the best solution would be card view (which is great in Podio) with some form of check list like in Trello. Then you have the your tasks and sub tasks visualized and access to them both from project view and task list view.

I agree, sub-tasks need to be added as a feature and those who would like to use it has the option.  I would use it more as a checklist but I don't want this list shown on the calendar or task list.  our business is the architectural field and we like to create a checklist for every project to make sure everything is done the same way everytime.

another example is: if a client of ours calls and gives us a list of items to change I would like to add one task named "Client Revisions" and then the list of items to change as sub-tasks.  these sub-tasks do not need to show on calendar or even on list of all tasks.... This could get overwhelming. imagine having 10 projects with a list of 100 checklist items, this would be 1000 tasks.

If you have any ideas on how I can accomplish this by using the existing system please inform me how, for I am still new to your software, but so far I enjoy using is.

I think that this is the only thing stopping PODIO being a great product. Its good, very good, But sub-tasks to me are vitally important

Es raro que no se les haya ocurrido crear subtareas de una tarea, o como items de una tarea específica, es muy imprtante

Considering moving away from Podio for this very reason. We cannot scale our oversized projects with a small agile team AND interface with customers and internally without having some sub-task management and task dependencies.

This is a deal breaker. If this isn't implemented within the next 1-2 weeks we're gone. We're 1 team member away from a premium upgrade too. We need a permanent solution and for this reason and the lack of ability to add tasks and calendar integrations as well, basic functions of apps like Asana and Trello. Really behind the 8 ball on this one Podio team.

Need subtasks too...It is not like it hurts others... they could have choice, like always but those who need it (and there are not just a few of them) would really apreciate it...please add subtasks and you will be one step closer to perfection :)

  • Hi guys,

Thanks for all your votes and comments :)

We actually see tasks in Podio kind of like subtasks already since they should and can be related to real tasks created in the apps. Lets say you have a project or deliverable app. You create app items as deliverables (overall tasks) - then you can relate tasks as actions to each deliverable or project. Learn more in this video: https://help.podio.com/hc/en-us/articles/201020378-Video-Using-tasks

You can for example install this task app and use the regular task function as "sub-task" to the app items:
    https://help.podio.com/hc/en-us/articles/201038678-Using-a-tasks-app

The task functionality in Podio is meant for small to-dos and quick actions (very small tasks) whereas the larger tasks should be stored in the app.

The following things are possible with a tasks app, which cannot be done with normal Podio tasks:

Adding custom fields to the task form
Assigning the same task to multiple team members
Getting an overview of what tasks your team is working on

I'm afraid there is no current plans in the short-term to create a sub-task feature in Podio due the reasoning above. We already see the current task functionality as a sub-task function :)

We will hopefully add improvements and new functionality to the task functionality in the future but I cannot give an exact timeframe on when this will be.

Hope this is just a bit helpful!

And oh, if you're interested to read more about the Get things done framework, here is a blog post on the topic by my colleague Anders Pollas: http://blog.podio.com/2011/06/10/podio-and-gtd/

    Cheers,

Hey Sara I think that's a great way manage Sara & Ron. We're using that right now in all our workspaces. But that's the issue. The tasks feature in Podio as global visibility and permissioning but the tasks app does not. I have the same task app in every workspace and it's very difficult for me to keep track of all of them because I have to click in twice in order to see one board. In the end that means clicking about 14 times just to see all the boards in each workspace.

Because the task board is limited to each respective workspace I'm unable to see an entire overview of all of the tasks at hand and manipulate the list filtering as I need. If there are any cross functional assignments then one employee will need to remember where the task was created in order to see it.

Quite cumbersome right? Podio doesn't load as fast as Trello so there's a bit of lag to go through all the boards.

Has there been any progress on sub-tasks and dependencies?  If not, we'd like to cast our vote in favor of this functionality.  To be clear, we'd like to be able to have:

    1. Tasks linked to other tasks as "sub-tasks";
    2. Tasks triggered by the completion of other tasks.

    Thanks!

Podio - What is the status on this? Any sub-task sort of features, like check lists? I think the ticket for me would be the ability to add a checklist to a task, and the task reflects a % completion based on how many items are checked off.

It is a really important idea ! For the same reason I have made my own case/task structure using my own definition of case, very much simular to the generic task form. A reference from the task to the case link cases with task. (a "one-to-many" relation or case/subtask relation)

I do not define my own taskform, because I think it would give total confusion to use both Podio-tasks and indvidual task.

However there are 2 big issues with this:

    1. I would like the reference between "current case" and a new PODIO-task was automatic.

    2. I would really really like to be able to trim the generic PODIO taskform/record to my individual needs.

Also I think it should be an option to get auto-inserted binding whenever 2 fields corresponds in 2 tables (apps)

for example: I look up a customer record and create a task, I have a common field between customer and task (customernumber etc.). The current customer should be displayed on the screen above the app, and when i select  create new task, the task will be bound to this customer.

Even better if I optional could create a new customer directly in a pop-up window, when typing the customer-field in the case-record.

i dont like subtask in task system, because subtask is app responsibility. i suggest to thinking follow way: use project tasks as app reference to mother task.

    explanation:

Project tasks are deliverables and their subject is define phase or subtask or milestone. should have more smaller objects related (issues, todo's timesheets and tasks in podio way - i think podio has little gtd approach on this. Tasks are rather personal or team actions and your req. is opportunity to build an app with project deliverables. (or use existing)

this is my approach, my team wrote a GTD app based on David Allen concepts, and working parallel on projects where deliver solutions - deliver complex deliverables.

recommend to read David Allen books, because help to understand what is action and what is task and project.

hope helps my dislike  ;) and arguments.

would be great if there was the ability to create sub task underneath a task OR ability to create a To Do list with assigned tasks underneath. Hierarchy as follows deliverable>To Do list>Task OR deliverable>task>sub task

This one thing sets podio apart from Asana. Podio is great for many reasons, but Asana is a better task manager mostly for this reason.

It would be really nice to see subtasks. I moved from Wunderlist to Podio, because Podio is way better in managing Projects.
But it lacks subtasks, which is a great tool when we need to make a checklist, for example.
Even with the GTD approach, its just easier to create subtasks instead of create a new item and then reference a taks to it.
Sometimes its very tiring to create several items with little information inside.

    @ Sara

Tell me the point create an App and then confusing user since you can add dual task in same app.
Because PODIO didn't have a function to disable the Podio Task system in a App.

there should be a more versatile system with tasks that allow you to shape it like a kanban board

Oh, and Tanner Chung... if you manage tasks the way I suggested (as an "assignment" app) you can use categories on a card view to make a Kanban board out of it... Neat, huh?

Yeah, I see what you're saying. Workspaces to me are a neat idea, but without data being available between them (for users who have access to both workspaces) there is not much value to having them. It's like putting up walls between your data. My business is small & lean, so I just have apps for different things in a shared workspace and maintain a policy of transparency between departments. No need for workspaces and separation in that type of organization. Just apps. Once you start having a whole lot of workspaces I agree you've got a bit of a problem. Might as well have 14 different Podio accounts in a way. I'm probably not qualified to offer much help there other than to wonder who (other than managers) needs to see all of the workspace assignments in one view.
