Thanks for all your comments and votes.

This is possible if you make the category field required and single choice. Your new item created will then have the status set automatically as new.

Another option could be to add a calculation field and use this to set a default value, when the item is created. You can see more info on the calculation field here https://help.podio.com/hc/en-us/articles/201019358-Calculations

We do not have a finished solution for setting all fields as default, but the calculation field can make it possible to some extend.

Thanks again for all your feedback and support.

I'd also like to be able to add a default list of members to an item in an app. For example, in events, we have a core group of people who are involved in pretty much every event (the a/v guy, janitorial, maintenance, etc.). I understand that they can see the events because they are members of the workspace, but if they are added specifically to the event itself, then they receive notifications regarding that specific event as it is created/changed.

@KRISTOFER, you can now use the Clone function to make this kind of thing easier.

Totally agree with Stephan. Would be most helpfull if you can define default values for each field.

In the project app, I would like it if in the "Category" feature you can specify one to be the default value when a "project" is created.

+1 This would speed creating new entries significantly.

    +1 here too :)

For lists / category attributes (like a project app mentioned by Cameron Urry) it could be a first step to take the first option as the default value. Especially if the attribute is required in the item.

Not sure if someone answered this.... But if you make a field "required", it will default to the first category after you save it.

Joe McCall is right. Making the field required solves this problem.

    @Lasse Lumiaho & @Joe McCall

I don't think this really solves the problem. When creating an app item by forwaring a email (as specified in the original post) nothing is set to a default value. Even if those fields are required.

The only way to set those required fields to values is to reopen the app item via web and re-save it. But this is not a solution at all ;)

My bad. Did not check that it works via email. I think the required fields should by set as default values regardless of how the app item was created.

Was just going to submit this as a request  when saw that it was already being discussed. Would totally enhance workflow capabilities to have the option of defining default values / categories.

Yes default values, including default dates (e.g. set to current date) when adding an item

Also need this. Making it required helps, but I have my categories in a specific order that makes logical sense but doesn't reflect the most common choice (low, medium and high priority, normal is the "default" but the order makes sense).

+1 Having default field values seems like a pretty basic feature and would be extremely helpful in our HelpDesk app.

There is 'default value' in the API... can it be used?

I also miss having a default value on categories, so I don't need to open each new item and set it to fx. category item "new item" for each of them.

E.g for items coming in via webform, a status category is added but only visible at the backend, it would be perfect to have it set to a selected default value.

For me it's not just default values from email. Required categories takes care of default values for category fields, but I need default dates as well.

As far as I can judge, this is very easy feature to implement. There are (at least) two ways to implement this feature:

    • Just add a 'default value' checkbox in the category field
    • Improve the workflow manager. Adding a 'this item is created by E-mail To App' trigger ("When") and adding a 'edit field x to y' ("Then") solves the problem as well and would be a big improvement to the workflow manager as well.

Podio, why are you totally ignoring this request?

i think just adding the workflow manager functionality to include categories would surely solve this, Podio. Then anytime an item is created, we could modify the categories of a field to be set.

+1 Podio on default categories or better workflow functionality.
