How to link a category to a calculation

I am trying to figure out how to link a position that is listed as a category from an app we have labeled project staff which is a drop down. The other application is a task and we are trying to duplicate the "Position" in other task without having to recreate them all each time we create new applications. Is this something that can me completed. I attempted to follow the code example breakdown for it, but I am having a hard time making it work. Any help would be great!

  Hi Jessicad,

  If the Tasks and the project staff app are related via a relationship field (correctly; if the task item and the project staff item are related) and if you want to display the Postion category in a calculation field in Tasks enter in a calc field in Tasks: 
  @All of Position.toString()
