Relationship field: hide existing items, allow only new item

In a relationship field, is it possible to require a new item (and hide the entire dropdown list of existing items)?

The relationship field is for appointments. As appointments are one-time affairs, there's not much point in allowing the selection of a past appointment in the relationship field.

  You can set up a relationship field to only show items in a specific view on the related app.  So you could create a view that will never have anything in it, and then the only option would be to create a new item.
