Pushing form data into podio using API (not webform)

Hi, we are looking to push info from a contact form (not a podio webform) into podio and create a lead record using the API.

Could you please provide details on
-getting an API access key for our account
-where to find API documentation that would be required

Or - if there is anyone that has sucessfully done this and could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated!
