Well, part of what you describe ("specify which field of which apps should be pulled into the merge-app") can right now be done via relationship fields.

    Hey Henrik,

a relationship field can only link one item to another as a whole, not single fields of that item. Therefore relationship fields are very useful for connecting things logically, building you project structure and filter views, but it doesn't solve any of the problems mentioned in my post.

But you gave me an idea: workflows!

    Case:

Because clients should be able to work together with us on certain project, but should not see f.e. all the tasks across our organization, I can't put all tasks in one single app. Instead I put several Task-Apps in any workspace where it's needed. My goal was to nevertheless offer our internal staff the possibility to view ALL of their tasks across ALL workspaces. This can actually right now be done through workflows.

I created a workflow in every Task-App that sends new tasks to a central Task-App in a workspace where only internal staff has access to. And it seems this actually works. I'll try now if it's possible to (again via a workflow) sync changes made to tasks in the central Task-App back to the one in the client-workspace.

So thank you Henrik for the input!

You can refer a single field from a related item by using a calculation field in the "source" app.

Ok that sounds interesting but I'm not sure I'm getting it. Would you mind giving me an example for that?
