Using the calc field via API för "live calculation"?

The "Modify template" page gives a preview of how the calculation will render, this happens live as I'm typing. Is there anyway I can utilize this via the API?

I'm want to take data from a form, post it to the calculation engine and display the result before the user actually submits the form.

  Unfortunately that's for internal use only. It wouldn't work for your use anyway as it calculates based on example values or values from an existing item only.
