How to use PodioComment

I'd like a little more information on how to use:

PodioComment::get_for( $ref_type, $ref_id );

To make an API call and get all comments for a particular item.

The API documentation is a little lacking so any help would be greatly appreciated.

  $comments = PodioComment::get_for( "item", 123456 );

  Where 123456 is the item_id.
