message notifications (by email) disabled if online

I was chatting the other day through podio with someone and very quickly my email filled up with emails for each message received. I want to receive an email when I receive a message if I'm not online, but when engaged in a chat session, I don't want to receive a bunch of emails.

  Did this help anyone? I don't see any settings options other than turning off email notifications for messages completely (which I don't want to do).
