More advanced calculations
CompletedI was wondering if there were any thoughts on allowing more advanced calculations. I would like to keep track of all the payments I receive from clients through various different apps I have.

Hi Sara
Yes, I have commented in the feature request forum as well. Like Herman, i'm sure what you come up with will be better than we could hope for! I think for me, I would be happy with the ability to have a couple of more operators or functions...and perhaps be able to use 3 or 4 fields...that would get most things done!
Today i was trying to calculate gross margin percentages on a projects app, based on timesheets and supplier invoices...so i needed to create about 10 redundant fields to generate the figures...and THEN do another bunch of calcs to simply multiply the result by 100 to get it to display like a percentage!
Sorry, just needed to get that off my chest! Perhaps there is a simpler way to calcualte percentages with Podio... but i can't work it out...without being able to operate on more than 2 fields at once!
Anyway, I know you are pushing this as hard as you can...just happy to help provide as many use cases as you need to help!!
thnx again Sara

Hey Jared,
We can't give any timeframe on releases, as you know development is by nature very uncertain so we prefer not to make any promises. This is something we understand is important for many users - and therefore we want to fix the current problem. But we can't say anything about when or how. Hope you understand.
We will make sure to keep you updated here when we have news to share.

I found a workaround for this for my purposes until there is a better solution. I collect final reports from funding applicants via webforms and they enter amounts of a) different kinds of revenue b) different kinds of expenses c) different kinds of funding amounts.
I had to make them all add up and then subtract, then divide, without too much work. So, when creating the app, I made fields add up, two at a time and then take THOSE fields and add them. Then I could do the same for expenses. By coupling up the calculations, you can end up with an equation - done automatically - that looks like this:
((A+B)+(C+D)) / ((E+F)) = %of private investment
I know that's a little complicated, but once you write out the calculation and break down the parts, you can figure out more complex equations.

Hey Greg,
Unfortunately we are not able to promise any specific timeframe, we prefer not to make any promises. As you know development is by nature uncertain and we will not say something that we can't hold on to later. Hope you understand. We will make sure to keep you updated here when we have news on this.

Sara, I know is not up to you, but I need to be direct and maybe unpleasant.
A company that pretends to provide an innovative Project Management platform AND claims to have an experienced software development team, cannot circumvent the basic project management best practices: prioritise features, estimate efforts and durations, plan milestones and deliverables, communicate the project plan and status with stakeholders.
You cannot say it is better not to have milestones, or priorities, in order not to break expectations.
These arguments make me think Podio is really weak in project management capability and - worse - has no a strong endorsment by Citrix, because cannot communicate transparently with its customers.
We are stakeholders, many are professionals, we do not need pleasantries , but transparent business programs.

I love hearing how passionate you all are about the advanced calculations on Podio! There are some really great use cases in this thread, and plenty of opportunities for the Podio product team to make our offering even better. Needless to say, there's a ton of challenges in making this not only functional, but really useful for a lot of users. We don't want to rebuild freeform Excel formulas, at the same time we need to create flexibility for you to be able to achieve what you need, and continue to work the way you want to.
This feature is very much on our radar, and our goal is to launch this no later than end of Q3 this year. On behalf of the Podio team, I'm looking forward to giving you even more Podio power in the not so distant future.

I also share the sentiments of those that have written before me. I've been using Podio on and off for a while now. In truth though, it has been more 'off' than 'on'. We love what Podio represents, but find it lacks in so many areas.
I have for too long now, stood waiting for Podio to focus on the aspects that are important to us, but feel continually let down. As a direct result of this, we have decided to launch Data Seed (http://dataseed.io).
We've some great ideas and lofty ambitions, but in we know that its true success lies in its ability to meet the needs of its users. To this end, we've constructed a small questionnaire on the site, which i'd be grateful for anyone who shares our pain, to complete. Our objective is to deliver a truly unified and empowering framework that helps put you back in touch with the data that drives your business.
Finally, it is worth stating once more of our admiration for Podio. But, like many of you, we felt the time had come to stop waiting and to start acting. Data Seed represents our approach to what we feel Podio should always have been. Keep in touch to be kept updated on our progress!

Dear Podio,
For the Podio team when you're developing the advanced calculations features:
A common use that I think a lot of people could use is putting ratings onto various pages and forms, and allowing Podio to add up and average the ratings. We often have more than one person rate job applicants, services we're thinking of using, companies, draft graphics (logos, banners, icons, etc.), and a wide range of other things. Then we run reports by rating with the top rated ones at the top of the report..
This is a standard way of collaborating in today's Web 2.0 world so I believe should be a priority. It saves a ton of time. Otherwise, we need to click on all 100 applicants, or all 20 services we're thinking of using, and view all of our team members' ratings of each, and add them up, and then enter them into a separate list. Then once a new team member rates them, we have to repeat it.
Of course being able to add up various dollar amounts like expenses, hours, etc. is important as people have described.
For dates and other things related to deadlines and progress and time spent, your developers at Podio might want to take a look at Redmine's approaches, because they have some good approaches there that could help Podio.
I look forward to the release of the calculations features. Thank you.

Regarding calculating with dates and time: I would like to be able to have people enter a drop-dead deadline date and then calculate a 1 month warning, 1 week warning etc. and be able to put them on a calendar. I didn't study the whole thread but did not spot this type of math with dates as a wished-for attribute. thanks
