Backup Strategy
AnsweredWhat is the recommended backup strategy for an organization / Employee Network? It looks like the only way to backup is to export the app items to Excel, one app at a time, and then you lose the conversation (comments).
Is there a way to use the API to loop through all apps in a company and export the data on a nightly basis? Has anyone written sharable code for this, or what do you suggest for an automated backup solution?
We Love Podio, thanks!!

Hi phil, thanks for picking this up.
I can see some of the challenges backup presents to Podio, i suppose for me its a matter of feeling my data is secured - whilst you have this covered i would also like the assurances that i have and more importantly in a useable format. Therefore i can see the excel exports are a good solution. the main problem here is.
The ability to backup workspaces & apps in one go, with manually having to do each at a time ( creating potential for error)
Backup options to Dropbox/Google & local disk would be brilliant.
Maybe including a backup historical log allowing users to restore a backup from a point in history maybe a podio app count log and manage this? thereby a complete log of the stores to dropbox or PC drive backup locations which could be clicked on to restore export at any point. a type of historical save/ change log!
Any ideas of an ETA for a fuller backup solution?

Hi all - we've just signed on to Podio - we are a small travel business and this is perfect for us. Well done to PODIO on developing such a system - so easy to set up and use. I am not a technical person so would appreciate some help with:
Is there a simple way to import contact details from MailChimp and create an auto-sync so with say weekly refreshes?
The data back up issue is critical. We are moving everything to the cloud and doing weekly back ups to external HDD's and Drop Box. I have read everything above and understand back up is coming and its complex (any date?) but also is there a simple way to just back up just the current task list?
Thanks
Ken

We also find backup to be critical. Most of my questions are also...what if we sign in one day and Podio workspaces are messed up. Podio has some issue....can they recover our account and get us back up and running?
A complete downloadable or dropbox backup is fine in the interim if there was a way to pull things back as needed.
We are building out heavily and being watched by some very large orgs to see how we fair. Would like to see answers/more discussion at minimum.

+1 I see many requests for a data liberation process, so please add my "yes please" vote. @Phil, you had asked if we are looking for point-in-time recovery or just getting our grubby hands on our data. I represent a SME of about 700+ employees and as much as we like what we see in Podio without a good export/liberation process it is difficult to commit our corporate data to a SaaS solution. We're not worried about restoring to a point in time, but just being able to preserve our proprietary and sensitive data locally - just in case...
As to formats, I recognize that it is difficult to capture all of this in a CSV. However, perhaps a large JSON file, or some other key-value pair representation? This does not have to be importable (to Podio), but with at least such a file we could parse it in the event of a disaster and pick out what we need.
Also, I'm not sure what type of database you are using (SQL? NoSQL? Other?), but perhaps being able to simply compress and copy the database datafiles might suffice, if we can restore it to a local DB and then query what we might need.
Thank you, Wolfgang.

This is an INCREDIBLE application in every way. It's like a perfect new suit or something.
The backup seems very necessary however. It would also be nice to have a little publicly available information on your infrastructure as well. (i.e.: Dropbox publishes all kinds of specs about how safe and secure users' data is on their service)
So, please add us to the list for requesting full and comprehensive user-side backup functionality!
Thank you Podio Team.

Hi again, it seems this is a hot issue for many podio users, Every email i receive that mentions Podio backup Strategy I get my hopes up, unfortunately it is only another update of a new posts requesting such a back feature from fellow users of podio and not a response from the podio team. Please Podio Dev. team can we have an update on this issue, what are ye thinking? Do we have an ETA for backup feature?

Phil & Sara,
,First, big fan of Podio and I see you making improvement everyday so we're here for a while. I feel more like a partner so very please.
Concerning Phils questions about methods and recommendations:
1) Method to export all "content" to Box.net or local server in the form of internal apps and files. I don't see any reason for our company to hold onto comments, discussions, likes etc.
2) Ability to backup all files attached to all workspaces
3) Scheduled backup ability to (1) and (2)
4) Please don't make me use the API. API != fast adoption.
5) Dream list: ability to restore workspaces to a point in time (ala OsX Time Machine)
6) I look at Podio as being a paradigm-busting relational database, I just need to backup the database.
I agree that the cloud based solution for backup using Amazon S3, Google Drive and Citrix is probably more reliable than just about 99.999999....% of all companies out there.
Here is the probablem, we need to convince "the others". That requires a transisional plan that moves through hybrid storage solutions as well as through existing IT policies within large-old companies.

I would like to add my vote in support of a folders hierarchy in Dropbox. I'm a very happy user of Podio, but with a rudimentary understanding of software (and nil on the programming front), I'd like to be able to do a simple drag and drop of individual app data for added security. Thank you, and keep up the great work!

I agree as well. We are looking to know that our data is secured somewhere on our local hard drives should internet have issues or fail for a period of time (i.e. the midwest blackout of 2003).
Seems to me that the best way would be to have Dropbox folders as discussed above with excel documents for each app.
Please make easy backup a priority & thanks for a great product!

Oh yeah, this is vital. If I put all my company's data in here and track progress on multiple projects only to find that one day it is gone, it would be catastrophic. What about a one button export to Dropbox or something? Or can you guys ensure replication by savings multiple backups to alternate data centres / clouds? I would even pay a couple bucks a month for this...
-
I agree - backup of some type is important and I do understand that is people are to trust Podio then they need some assurance that their data is safe.
However I think the issue could be that Podio is so flexible and not a "true" database it would be hard to automate backups based on so many variables.
FWIW the bare minimum would be a "one-Excel-per-app" backup that the subscriber could run as needed. That way in calamity - the user at least had some semblance of their data just in case...
But yes - I would pay for this facility.

come on podio team, provide a backup solution.
How many people do you need to request this feature, starting to frustrate podio users now. you say you are looking into this but so far it seems to be all talk.
I am really reluctant to use podio fully as a result,
Today i have considered unsubscribing from this thread as i am fed up with receiving notifications of further requests for a backup feature and no solution. How long will it be before myself and other users consider this as an option and stop using podio altogether.
Dont get me wrong i think the podio system is great, but it needs improving in this area before you can be considered a fully fledged viable option and be taken seriously.
Please, please make your users happy and feeling their data is secure give us an ETA on the backup feature!!!!
-
Yes please! After hearing from some other local business success using Podio I would love to switch our company over. But no backup system / restore in place for critical processes is ridiculous. **ANY **business service offered online should have some sort of recovery system. Whether it's user error or the fault of the program. Please give us an ETA
-
I think the backup is going to be a deal-breaker for us. We're just trying Podio out, with me as the guinea pig. I've set up a couple projects, and it's working for me, but I can't recommend we switch over everything unless I know that yesterday's entries can be restored in the event of a catastrophe.
