Is there a way to create a dependency on a task?

I think this feature is critical, otherwise it gets wrapped up in a txt field. I would label this function as not simply a nicety...it's going to be more and more critical.
Podio does well to put things in one place, but the workflows definitely need some development as far as I can see...sometimes it could give us the impression that we've covered our bases, but without date triggers and dependencies this could be somewhat of an illusion. The goal is not having to remember anything, right? :)

Hi fellas. I agree with Doug. And Gustav, yes, there must be a way to do this without it being too overly complicated. Trigger work well, where a task's start date and due date is a duration, and triggered to begin after the completion of a previous, parent task. There is a product for programmers out there that helps create functionality like this. I don't recall at the moment whether it was a Jira or Ajax product.... I could find it if that helps.

agree about task dependencies but would like to add that they should be also added to autotasks (in addition to due dates and recurring options being added to autotasks). Here's my suggestion on how this could work. http://screencast.com/t/LPp0A4ssCU

Kevin is absolutely right, my organization is seeing this as a major weakness in Podio. Without task dependencies tasks are really not useful to us because our tasks are always triggered by something else having been completed.
Can you give us a sense that Podio is working on this?

We're discussing a lot of these, personally I think that (as I wrote in my earlier comment) this being simple is very important.
We wouldn't want to overcomplicate workflows, in my worst nightmares this could be very confusing for the people who use Podio. I hope you agree with me on keeping things simple, but sometimes (most of the time) it's the simple things that require a lot of work :)

I am glad to see you are involved with the Podio community. Hopefully you are able to develop this ability sometime in the near future. I will remain subscribed to this thread for that eventuality, but unfortunately, this lack of functionality did force our company to sign up with a competitor for the time being. I look forward to taking another look at Podio once this development is complete.

Gustav...Thank you for your involvement. Keeping things simple is a must but as Ruben has laid out in a very logical way in his demonstration, it can be done.
I think the fact that it's so important to so many companies should be an overriding consideration to everything else. If your developers take features that are critical to Podio users and make them with the guiding principle of Podio's simplicity than surely they will come out with a great solution...that is simple to use.
This "ask" makes it easier for us to do business, and it should most certainly be included due to the commonality of it. It makes it easier for all of us to do business, and I think that is the ultimate end game you are trying to achieve.

I love Podio. However wish it had a few more features like a process management system. Workflow is super important to me. I had to go with something a little more complicated than Podio because dependencies are necessary for workflow. I'm currently using processmaker and recommend that Podio check out some of the key features of a process management system like that to consider for Podio.

This software's lack of visibility to task dependencies and resource allocation across multiple projects is frustrating. Thought it would be better with the premium version but it still is not up to the level where this is a functional tool for organizations who have people working multiple projects at the same time.

I'm so impressed with so many of your features but until task dependencies and resource allocation across multiple projects is a feature I can't move our organisation of our current project management and bug tracking tool. Any idea of whether these are features that are in the pipeline?

Amy- I asked the same question and have the same need. We did go w/ Podio tho as the team loved the interface. Here's a work around that we're trying- I'm not thrilled w/ it but better than nothing-deliverables are modifiable- add a hrs field. Use deliverables as tasks then u can customize a report to pull showing the hrs. All dependencies tho are manual, but at least this gives some view to resource allocation.

I have found many instances, where a dependency is very necessary. I would just create a dependency option, similar to how you "relate/link" a field or app to a task etc. Basically, like in the projects app, you can associate a milestone or deliverable. You can create a field like the "required" function, but will simply read "Require Completion Before Others" . You could also "GREY" out other tasks that can't be completed yet until the preceding tasks are completed. That should be very simply understand on the UI side. Drag and Drop functionality on this would be a plus too incase anything needed to be re-arrranged. Additionally, you could create a new list view function, for viewing the entire set of tasks in a new view that I havent' yet seen in PODIO .

Here's a very simple stab at the dependency problem: allow @mentions in all text fields.
Right now, you can @mention a Contact in your status update. But what if you could @mention an app item in another app item's Notes? Or event in its name: "Check with @Joe on how @Project is going".
This isn't full dependency, but it's a very clean and simple solution to arbitrary linking of Podio items, something Insightly does EXTREMELY well.

I was fascinate with preview and first steps. But now great disapponted.
You focus on view data. But not on connect data.
For example - i do realation field to other app. But I CAN NOT choose what field I need to choose.If you think perfect product it is impossible with no dependencies.
How any even small business do structure of documents, inventory etc?
It is simple link to parent and child whih are great step forward.Now your answers look like "get lost it is not simple".

Hi Aleksei,
Podio does support arbitrary relationships between items. If you create an item by clicking the "+" icon in the upper right corner, the new item will be related to the current one.
Why Podio doesn't make this feature available on a more general basis, such as to connect two existing items, I don't understand.

Hi All,
We're currently on Basecamp and looking to move to a new platform that offers true visibility of project timelines and resource allocation. I've obviously come across Podio and have mixed emotions...
In one breath you offer such a beautiful interface and cover areas of "organisational" management none of your comps are offering yet it feels like some core elements of project management (inconveniently what we are looking for as mentioned above) are not accounted for.
Am I missing something? Has there been a radical change in project management that I'm not aware of? I guess my real question is, if I were to move our company to Podio tomorrow, how would I have visibility on our project timelines and my resource allocation?
Can you please tell me if I've overlooked something in the platform as I really want to signup but just cannot right now?!?!
