Export null/empty values

I'm trying to export a very large application - and I'm performing an export for each value I see for this field. That means I also need to perform an export for items where the field is empty/null

But when I try to pass a filter with a field ID and a null value I get this response. Is it still not possible to filter for null values? How can I perform an export for items where this field isn't set?

Status Code: 400 - Invalid value null (null): must be non empty string,

  Thankfully I was able to implement a solution using the item_id - but I'm still curious if this is possible and I'm just submitting the filter incorrectly. I saw some posts here asking about it stating it was a planned feature but those were a few years back
